Hi Ho Hi Ho, It's Off To Work I Go!

Mining is a beneficial skill because many of the other RuneScape skills and quests depend upon the successful collection of ores and essence. To gain beginner knowledge of Mining you should start by visiting Monlum, the Mining Tutor located to the South of Lumbridge Castle. Players often refer to the mine he inhabits as Lumbridge / Lumbridge Swamp South East Mine. Thankfully this mine contains two of the starting ores you need to get your training underway; five rocks each of Copper and Tin. When you talk to Monlum he will gift you with a bronze pickaxe, which can serve as both a Mining tool and a beginning weapon.

To mine an ore right click on it to prospect it. This will tell you which type of ore is contained in any particular rock. As you become accustomed to Mining you will seldom need to prospect rocks as you will know which type of ore is contained in the rock by the color of the vein that runs through it's center. Now that you know what type of ore is contained in the rock, just click it. Providing your character is wielding a pickaxe or is holding one in inventory and your Mining level is sufficient, your character will begin to mine ore.

Occasionally one of two things may happen; a rock may begin to smoke or you will find an uncut gem while Mining. If your rock begins to smoke; STOP Mining immediately and move to a different rock. The smoking rock will blow up and damage your pickaxe. If you uncover an uncut gem place it in the bank, as your Crafting level increases you will be able to cut these gems using a chisel and use them in the crafting of fine jewellery.

Notice that both the bronze and iron pickaxes require only a level 1 in Mining. Upgrade your equipment as soon as possible because your speed in Mining is based on a combination of your Mining Level and your pickaxe type. If your axe head should fly off its handle, you have 30 seconds to locate and repair it, after that time the axe head will disappear. Reattaching an axe head is easy, just place the head and handle into your inventory and then use the head on the handle, the pickaxe will instantly be repaired.

As soon as you are able, you may wish to visit The Scorpion Pit Mines of Al Kharid. The Scorpions are a level 15 so you need a minimum of a level 30 combat for safe passage. If you do not have at least a level 30 in combat be sure to bring bring food for the journey. The mine is close to a bank and houses one of the largest selections of ore rocks available on RuneScape: 1 tin, 3 copper, 9 iron, 5 silver 3 coal, 2 gold, 2 mithril and 2 adamantite rocks. If you have made it to level 9 Mining you will find this mining site to your advantage and don't forget your pickaxe can double as a weapon freeing one place in your inventory.

Power Leveling in the skill of Mining is also known as "Drop Mining". Drop Mining is exactly what it sounds like, Mining ores and dropping them for quick experience points. There are two variations of "Drop Mining" one in which a player mines ores that are easy to mine for their level because the lower level ores respawn quickly and provide the miner with fast but small bursts of exp and the other in which a player mines a higher level ore such as coal that is readily abundant in an area with no bank facilities near by so it is promptly dropped for a larger burst of exp. Dropping ores can be a bit of a hassle as you have to drop each one individually but it is worth the experience points if you can do it swiftly.

Dwarven Stouts are available for purchase from the Rising Sun Bar in Falador for 3 gp. This drink will temporarily raise your Mining stat by one point. Be forewarned however that it also decreases your attack, defense and strength skills by 7. The side effects don't last long and you really can't complain because Dwarven Stouts only cost 3 gp and can mean the difference between having a level high enough to complete a quest or not. It is possible with everything you're trying to accomplish to forget where to purchase the many different stat raising drinks available to you, so take the time to purchase a sufficient amount before leaving the many pubs and bars or you may find yourself wishing you had.

Helpful Tips:

  • As your skill increases so does the type of ores you can mine.
  • Extraction of higher level ores takes longer amount of time.
  • Higher level ores have a longer respawn time then the lower level ores.
  • The more people on a server the quicker an ore will respawn.
  • Use the highest pickaxe possible.
  • Smelt ores into bars using a furnace, then smith the bars into useful items using an anvil.
  • You can smith your own pickaxes after completing the Perils of Ice Mountain Quest.

Use "The Guide" on the left to discover the Mining level you need to attain before Mining a specific type of ore or using a particular pickaxe type. Pickaxes may be purchased at Nurmof's Pickaxe shop in the Dwarven Mines and can often be found in the general stores. Unneeded ores and pickaxes may be traded, sold to other players via the GE (General Exchange) or sold to general stores.
