When you pray to the three gods of RuneScape; Guthix, Saradomin (Sara) and Zamorak (Zammy) they will come to your aid by making you instantly stronger or less vulnerable to certain types of attacks.
Advancing in the skill of Prayer is simple, defeat a foe and burry their bones, the more bones you burry the more Prayer experience (exp) you will receive and hence the higher level you will attain.
A blacked out Prayer Icon means that you have not achieved the required level of experience to use a particular Prayer.

By contrast however a colored Prayer Icon shows that do have enough experience and are a high enough level to use that particular Prayer.

A lit up Prayer Icon shows that a chosen Prayer is in use and will continue to drain Prayer points until you deselect the chosen Prayer.

It is worth mentioning that you can use more than one Prayer at a time but doing so will drain Prayer points at a faster rate. When your Prayer points hit zero you will be unable to use any Prayers
until your Prayer points are recharged. You may recharge your Prayer points by visiting the many churches and temples scattered throughout RuneScape and praying at the altar located within.
